“The way to get started is to quit talking and begin doing.” -Walt Disney

Have you ever looked at the successes of others and wondered how they did it? Are you always setting goals for yourself but never actually taking that first step to accomplish those goals? If this sounds familiar, don’t despair! There are simple actions that you can take to make achieving and setting goals easier for yourself, and by taking simple steps to make and achieve goals, you will find that every aspect of your life is more fulfilling.

One of the most important mindsets to utilize when you are setting goals is the Possibility Mindset. Much of what feels daunting about goal setting is the attitude that most people use to set those goals. If you make goals for yourself and then stare at the list of goals for long enough, allowing doubts to creep in all around you, you will not get very much done! And you will likely feel defeated long before you even get started on the work that will make those goals attainable.

Choose instead to use the Possibility Mindset when considering your goals. No one who has ever made their dreams a reality allowed doubt to defeat them before they even started taking action.  Always remember that most big goals–destination goals are actually a series of small tasks that need to be done first–performance goals.  If you engage these smaller tasks with the attitude that anything is possible, you will find that taking action is easier than you thought!

I invite you to examine your big goals and break them down into smaller tasks–your performance goal.  Now that you have done that, tackle any of these smaller tasks, no matter the order. Once you have handled that small task, take on the next. Never let doubt invade your mind.  You will be surprised at how quickly your list will shrink! Before you know it, you will have accomplished all the tasks required to complete your big goal–your destination goal!

Once you change the way you are approaching your goals and stop being a talker and start being a doer, the possibilities are endless! Accomplishing goals is often its own reward and you will find that succeeding at any size goal feel great! Success breeds more success and succeeding in even small things will help build your confidence with regard to more difficult tasks.

I learned at a young age that believing in myself was as important as believing in my goals. Just believing in your goals is often not enough by itself. Part of the Possibility Mindset is also believing in you yourself. Doubt defeats innovation as well as action. While you are taking action to accomplish your goals, I want you to also take action to support and promote yourself through the Possibility Mindset.

Here are some simple steps you can take to take action, succeed and be self-affirming!

  • Instead of thinking about why you can’t do something, think about reasons that you can. Doers are successful because they are focused on what they can do and not what they can’t.
  • Remember times that you have found solutions to problems in the past that worked out. If you can do it once, you can do it again.
  • Know the difference between the destination goal and the performance goal you set along the way to help you get there. Your destination goal might feel frighten to you but the smaller goals that you set along the way are attainable. Knowing the difference between the two can make goal setting easy and rewarding.
  • Set big goals, even if it feels like they are too big to be realistic.
  • Last of all, start. Take action and follow through!

Here’s to your success!
